ARKANSAS BUSINESS of the Year 1990

On Feb. 7, Arkansas Business - joined by 460 other businessmen and women - honored some of the best and most notable business professionals in Arkansas at our third annual Arkansas Business Awards banquet.

Guests, finalists and winners gathered at the Excelsior Hotel's Grand Ballroom to hear Sen. Dale Bumpers, D-Ark., deliver the keynote speech. Arkansas Business publisher Alan Leveritt was master of ceremonies.

Before the banquet, a panel of five independent judges narrowed the entrants to finalists in each of three categories (grouped by the size of the business). An additional category for Executive of the Year was also included.

This year's winners are:

* Category One (1-25 employees): Engineered Solutions Inc., owned and operated by Rod Ford and his partner Tony Jones. Started three years ago, Engineered Solutions is a systems engineering and computer software company providing automation services to industrial manufacturers.

* Category Two (26-75 employees): Akin Industries of Monticello. Under president Richard Akin's guidance, Akin Industries has created a lucrative niche for itself by supplying furniture to the health care industry.

* Category Three (76-350 employees): Jungkind Photo-Graphic, owned by Robert Bumgardner and Dale Gordon. Jungkind is one of the fastest growing photographic dealers in the nation.

* Executive of the Year: President Bob Shell, of Baldwin & Shell Construction Co. Under Shell's leadership, Baldwin & Shell had one of its most successful years in 1990 in its 45-year history.

Thanks once again to our co-sponsors: Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, Arkansas Louisiana Gas Company, Baldwin & Shell Construction Co., Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arkansas, Deloitte & Touche, First Commercial N.A., KATV Channel 7, LDDS of Arkansas, Metropolitan National Bank, MCI Telecommunications Corp., OneBank, Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., Twin City Bank, Union National Bank and Worthen Banking Corp.
