Arizona Draper's & Damon's Celebrates 80 Years of Fashionable Women.

Descendants of Virginia Draper Mark Their Company's 80(th) Anniversary with an Endearing Tribute to America's Coco Chanel

IRVINE, Calif. -- On February 27 Judy Draper-Bostwick, the grand-niece of Virginia Draper along with her cousins Brad Farmer and Jeff Farmer will celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Draper's & Damon's, a retail company founded by Virginia Draper in 1927. All 44 Draper's & Damon's stores will join the celebration offering its customers a commemorative gift with purchase including local Mesa, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sun City, and Tucson locations.

"Any woman in 1906 who started a newspaper route at age 11, ran a hotel at 14, eloped at 15 and was widowed by 18 was in for a pretty extraordinary life," begins Judy Draper-Bostwick, the grand-niece of Virginia Draper. According to Judy, "extraordinary" is an understatement in describing the achievements of her great-aunt, who happened to be the fashion company's founder and one of the first career women in America.

"You can't help but admire the sheer audacity of women like Virginia," recalls Brad the company's CEO. "For a woman to spearhead a successful fashion business in a male-driven society was not only unheard of in the '20s, it just wasn't done."

The brand was born in 1921, when Virginia (then a women's clothing buyer for a millinery store in Texas) happened upon a small, avant-garde fashion boutique in Paris named Chanel Modes. It was then that a chance encounter with the boutique's owner (who was there to introduce her new perfume, CHANEL NYU5) inspired Virginia to offer a modern, worldly style of clothing to American women that not only flattered their figure, but also accentuated their intelligence. Six years after visiting Chanel Modes, Virginia opened the Draper Studio of Modes on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. Her business exploded, and she soon moved her studio to a larger space at 1855 E. Colorado Boulevard. Draper's & Damon's remodeled the building in 1948 to reflect Virginia's passion for modern style. That building stands today as a historical landmark and as an example of the Route 66/art-deco style applied to a small commercial building.

"Virginia's bold, high-energy love of life is reflected in every fashion collection we offer," states Jeff Farmer, a grand-nephew and vice president of Merchandising. "80 years later, women everywhere still connect with her timelessness, confidence and femininity, and that's what makes Draper's & Damon's so unique. Our 80th anniversary collection is designed for women who possess a bit of the precocious spirit of women like Ayn Rand, Coco Chanel, Kate Hepburn and Emilia Earhardt."
