Martyn has done a service to historians of Late antiquity and early Christianity with this annotated translation of three commentaries by Catholic bishops in Africa under the rule of the Arian Vandals. The bishops, all named Victor, have left a chronicle of the time, replete with stories of martyrdom and miracles that, nevertheless, tell a great deal about the situation during the era of the invasions and beyond. The animosity between the Vandals and Romans was based more on religious grounds than the "barbarian" origin of the former. Each section of the book is preceded by an introduction giving what is known about the bishop. A further translation from the Greek of a statement of belief, possibly by Athanasius, ends the collection. A list of bishops and priests who came to Carthage to affirm their Arian faith to King Huneric is also given. The only flaw in this translation is the lack of an index.
