Are you a heroic or post-heroic manager?

Do you feel that you own or are responsible for your department/team's work? At one time, most managers would answer "yes" to this question. However, the conditions under which heroic management, where corporate leaders act as lone decision-makers or innovators, works, are not as common as in the past.

"To be an effective leader -- a post-heroic leader -- managers must develop the potential of all employees, and create shared responsibility teams to solve problems and share in the outcomes. Most managers find it difficult to relinquish responsibility to team members because they fear that tasks will not be completed properly, and yet they will still be held accountable. However, if managed correctly, teams can often out-perform their managers' expectations, "explains Allan Cohen, co-author with David Bradford of Managing for Excellence: The Guide to Developing High Performance in Contemporary Organizations -- the model for Wilson Learning Corporation's Managing For Excellence: Empowerment Through Shared Responsibility Workshop.

The following quiz, developed by Wilson Learning, can give managers some indication of their leadership styles, and identify areas that give managers some indication of their leadership styles, and identify areas that may need improvement in order to be a successful post-heroic manager.

Read each pair of statements and circle either "A" or "B" to indicate which of the statements best describes the situation for your work unit. When answering the questions, managers should consider the "work unit" to include the manager and manager's direct reports or team members.
