The 17th Arctic Winter Games were launched in Nuuk, Greenland on 17 March.

The Arctic flame was reportedly lit, according to tradition, by the most experienced and the least experienced participants of the games, namely Hans Holm who took part for the first time in 1972 and Arnannguaq Lyberth, 12, who takes part for the first time this year.

The games were held for the first time in 1970 in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
