25 YEARS AGO

Dr Cuthbert Bardsley, the Bishop of Coventry since 1956, is to retire next year. Dr Bardsley, who is 68, will resign on May 6 1976, the day after the 20th anniversary of his enthronement. He said: 'I thought it would be a good date to retire on and be able to look back on 20 years in Coventry.'

50 YEARS AGO

A British European Airways twin-engined Viking aircraft from Paris crashed last night at London Airport, after being diverted from Northolt in the fog, and burst into flames. There were just two survivors among the 30 people on board, which included a crew of four.

100 YEARS AGO

Birmingham Town Hall will next week welcome Mr Winston Churchill MP who will give his deeply interesting lecture entitled: 'The War As I Saw It'. The lecture, commencing at 7.15, will be illustrated by Mr Churchill's own photos projected by lantern slides. The chair will be taken by His Grace The Duke of Marlborough.
