A guard dog patrol has been introduced at a 17-storey council tower block in Coventry to try to stamp out hooliganism. The city council is paying a private security firm to carry out the nightly watch on John Fox House, in Bell Green, for a three month trial period.

Aston Villa 3 Blackpool 2. Stanley Matthews and the phenomena of a dry day took 42,000 spectators to Villa Park on Saturday, and they were well rewarded by the sight of the Blackpool winger in a typically irrepressible mood and Aston Villa's second win in three home games. Villa must take full marks for tenacity in this match, for they had to take the lead three times before victory was assured.

John Chambers, butcher, aged 24, from Stratford Road, was placed in the dock again on the charge of feloniously wounding his wife by stabbing her in the neck with intent to murder her on the night of August 10. His wife claims that the defendant had been drinking heavily and had threatened her on more than one occasion.
