Architects collect three SARA design awards.

The Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) has named Swanke Hayden Connell Architects (SHCA) the recipient of three awards as part of its 2003 Professional Design A wards program.

SHCA was recognized at the recent SARA annual convention in New York City with the National Firm Award as well as two additional awards for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Randalls Island Fire Training Academy projects.

The SARA National Firm Award was given to SHCA in recognition of its continuing dedication to design excellence, its achievements in historic preservation, and its growth and diversification over the past 40 years. SARA cited the firm's restoration efforts on the U.S. Capitol building and the Statue of Liberty; its expansion into global markets in the United Kingdom, Europe, Africa, India, South America and China; and its work in such sectors as commercial, educational, healthcare, hospitality, residential and retail design.

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America national headquarters project received a Merit Award. Located at 434 West 33rd Street in New York City in a former manufacturing building, the facility features offices, a multi-purpose conference suite, library, staff canteen and gym. High ceilings and skylights that take advantage of abundant natural lighting provide a vibrant working environment. A series of video and media display walls incorporated into the design of each floor dynamically convey the organization's history and goals.

The Fire Training Academy at Randalls Island in New York City was the recipient of a Special Recognition Award. SHCA designed three new facilities for the New York City Fire Department, including a classroom building, field house and a "burn building."

The state-of-the-art complex recreates a fully enclosed internal city block that allows the department recruits to train under a variety of scenarios using real fires. Objects made of steel house "fireplaces" which are computer con, trolled to respond to the application of water during the training exercise.
