Arab League calls Netanyahu's plan to annex parts of West Bank as an "aggression".

Baghdad /NINA/- Arab Foreign Ministers have condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said. Netanyahu said on Tuesday he planned to annex parts of the Jordan Valley in the West Bank if he wins the election in a week. Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, but the Palestinians, who signed interim peace deals with Israel in 1990 including security cooperation, want the territory as part of their future state. The Foreign Ministers of the Arab League said in a statement after a meeting in Cairo that they regarded Netanyahu's declaration as "a serious development and a new Israeli aggression by declaring the intention to violate international law, the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions, including Security Council resolutions 242 and 338". "The Council considers these statements to undermine the chances of any progress in the peace process and undermines all its foundations," Aboul Gheit told reporters after the meeting. Arab League Foreign Ministers were meeting in Cairo but added an emergency session after Netanyahu made his comments live. According to the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem, said that some 65,000 Palestinians and 11,000 Israeli settlers live in the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea region. The most important Palestinian city there is Jericho, home to 28 villages and some Bedouin communities. Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi called on Twitter Netanyahu's plan a "dangerous escalation". Jordan and Egypt are the only Arab countries to have signed peace treaties with Israel. Hanan Ashrawi, a senior PLO official, wrote on Twitter that Netanyahu "seeks to impose Greater Israel on all of the historic Palestinian territories and implement a plan for ethnic cleansing." In his battle for political survival after inconclusive elections in April, Netanyahu renewed a pledge to annex all settlements Israel has built in the West Bank./ End
