Aquino urges Filipinos to join Earth Hour.
President Benigno Aquino III urged Filipinos to join the Earth Hour. Aquino said that this worldwide effort to lessen the effects of climate change is just one of the programs that should be pushed.
The president also called for more programs and initiatives in the country to preserve and protect the environment.
Aquino said in a statement that people's efforts must be "harmonized so that development today does not make us more vulnerable tomorrow."
Aquino said the Earth Hour may help in avoiding calamities like super typhoon Yolanda which devastated the Visayas and caused thousands of deaths.
Aquino said sustainability should be among the imperatives in humanity's pursuit of progress and prosperity.
"Earth Hour, therefore, is not merely an event. It is a commitment to undertake a more sustainable way of life---not only in this single hour, but in all of our activities. In this manner, our individual actions, summed together, resound to our collective advancement," Aquino said.
The Philippines is set to join the observance of Earth Hour tonight by switching off lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Earth Hour is a global project of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). (Mary Rose A. Hogaza)
