Lunar highlight

Name: Theophilus

Location: Bordering on Mare Nectaris.

Type: Deep crater, with an imposing central mountain (having four summits) rising 1400 m above the crater floor. Size: 104 km

Best seen: Five days after New Moon and four days after Full Moon.

Notes: With Cyrillus and Catharina, forms a lovely trio of linked craters. Named after the 4th-century Egyptian Theophilus, twenty-third Pope of Alexandria.

Planet visibility

Mercury and Venus are prominent in the morning
sky during April. Mars can be seen in the evening
sky. Jupiter rises during the course of the evening
and is visible until dawn. Saturn can be seen in the
morning sky, and by mid-month can be seen for
more than half the night.

Stellar occultations

The Moon occults omicron Sgr on the morning
of April 25. Predicted time of disappearance for
selected locations are: Bloemfontein (06:31:48),
Cape Town (05:55:27) and Durban (06:34:28).
