Fully Automated, Temperature-Programmed Chemisorption Analyzer

The AutoChem 2910 Catalyst Characterization System delivers accurate temperature-programmed chemisorption analyses for determining catalytic properties such as percent of metal dispersion, active metal surface area, acid strength, and more. It utilizes Windows-based software to provide a familiar and easy-to-learn user interface for analysis management and data reduction. The highly flexible analysis protocol facilitates the most complex sequencing of pretreatment and analysis procedures including TPD, TPR, TPO and pulse chemisorption.

The AutoChem 2910 is equipped with four mass flow controllers for accurate and precise gas control and inert gold-plated detector filaments for long life. It also contains four temperature-controlled component compartments to assure accurate gas quantity calculations and to eliminate internal condensation. Optional vapor generator, gas blender and subambient analysis capability further enhances the versatility of this remarkable catalyst characterization system.

Model 021 LN2 Transfer System

The 021 [LN.sub.2] Transfer System allows the transfer of liquid nitrogen or liquid argon from a non-pressurized storage dewar into smaller containers used in laboratory experiments.

The system was specifically developed for conveniently filling dewars for gas adsorption instruments but also can be used for other cryogen applications. The model can discharge cryogens at adjustable rates up to 3 liters/min. The roller base makes it easy to move the 021 System to the location where the cryogen is needed. The spigot and insulated, flexible hose enable convenient filling and refilling of analysis dewars. The system can hold liquid nitrogen or argon up to 30 days allowing cost-efficient use of the cryogen. This system is manufactured under ISO 9001 requirements and meets CE standards.

New Glove Box Pycnometer

The new AccuPyc 1330 GB (Glove Box) Pycnometer performs high-speed, high-precision volume and density measurements. It is supplied in two sections: the analysis chamber and the electronic control system. The two sections are connected electrically by cables, allowing the analysis chamber to be located in a different environment from the control electronics. This is useful for those needing to control the instrument from a safe environment while the analysis chamber is located in a radioactive area or in an environment that may be hazardous to the operator. Analysis can be performed on a wide variety of materials including powders, object, and slurries.

New CEQ[TM] 2000XL CE-Based DNA Sequencing System Provides Faster Runs, Longer Reads

The next generation CEQ[TM] 2000 DNA Analysis System for fully automated DNA sequencing and fragment analysis has been announced by Beckman Coulter. The new CEQ 2000XL uses capillary electrophoresis (CE) technology with a linear polyacrylamide gel to increase read lengths while shortening run times. Cycle time per capillary has been reduced to 100 minutes, reading out up to 700 bases, the official specifications for the CEQ 2000XL.

"DNA sequencing customers have an ongoing need for increased productivity which means getting more information in less time," explains Jeff Chapman, Strategic CE Product Manager. Beckman Coulter has led the CE field since the technique was commercialized, and will continue to work on enhancements in capillary arrays, chemistries and base-calling algorithms to deliver shorter cycle times and longer read lengths for DNA sequencing applications. Capillary electrophoresis methodology improves lab efficiency by eliminating plate washing, gel casting and the tasks associated with loading samples on to slab gels. The CEQ[TM] 2000XL features laser-induced fluorescence detection, four-color dideoxy-terminator chemistry, and operates in a microplate format. In addition to delivering high-quality base calling, the CEQ 2000's software measures the accuracy of each base call, eliminating the need to access a separate software program for accuracy determinations.

Automated Envelope Density Analyzer

The GeoPyc 1360[R] pycnometer measures the envelope density of porous objects of irregular size and shape. It uses a unique displacement measuring technique which eliminates messy waxes and mercury used in prior techniques. A medium called DryFlo[R], consisting of microspheres and additives to increase flowability, is used. The sample is placed in a bed of DryFlo, then the bed is gently agitated and compacted around the sample. The GeoPyc 1360 automatically collects the displacement data, performs the calculations, and reports envelope density and volume. Percent porosity and specific pore volume can also be reported when absolute density is provided.

The T.A.P. (Transverse Axial Pressure) density version of the GeoPyc emulates the classical tap density analysis - faster and with less noise. Available as a standard analyzer or as an option to an existing GeoPyc, T.A.P. Density analysis allows the user to precisely set the pressure exerted on the powder bed, as well as other parameters of the test. This results in the ability to define exactly the conditions under which the GeoPyc will emulate the tap density test. These conditions can be reproduced on any other GeoPyc in any other location throughout the world.

New Suite of Software Expands Data Capability of Liquid Scintillation Counter

The LS WinConnection Suite for the LS 6000 Series of Scintillation Counters has been introduced by Beckman Coulter. This new package of three 32-bit Windows-compatible software programs delivers enhanced capabilities for archiving data on a PC or network drive, along with features that meet the specialized demands of regulatory compliance.

The Data Capture/Network Software module collects scintillation data in the background, unattended, allowing the computer to be used for other applications. It automatically converts the original Beckman Standard Format (BSF) files to other popular formats, such as ASCII, Lotus 1-2-3, and Microsoft Excel. The BSF File Utility provides viewing and printing capabilities of GLP/GMP compliant BSF files, manual file conversions, graphical representation of data and many more useful tools. The Instrument Performance Tracking module displays and analyzes data from LS standards, collected over time and provides quality reports for regulatory environments. Beckman Coulter and ThermoQuest Collaborate on EC/MS/MS Solutions

Beckman Coulter introduces the new P/ACE MDQ - Finnigan [LCQ.sup.DUO] CE/MS/MS system, the result of a collaboration with ThermoQuest Corp. Developed for the analysis of basic pharmaceuticals and the characterization of peptide digests, this new application system combines the separation advantages of capillary electrophoresis (CE) with versatile mass spectrometry detection.

New High-Capacity Centrifuge for Bioprocessing

The new Avanti[R] J-HC high-performance, high capacity bioprocessing centrifuge has been introduced by Beckman Coulter. Featuring the patented high-torque SR (switch reluctance) brushless drive with a small footprint and standard electrical requirements (30A), the Avanti J-HC processes large sample volumes at up to 10,000 rpm. It is ideal for batch processing of cells and precipitates in pilot production and process development facilities of biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

This new centrifuge can run seven rotors, including the new 7.5 liter JS-3.4A-1250 ARIES[TM] singing-bucket rotor, as well as the 6 liter JLA-8.1000 rotor (15,900 x g). The 7.5 liter ARIES rotor features new J-Wide labware, which has a wide open cup for easy pellet recovery and an aerosol cover with a 0.2 m filter O-ring to facilitate biocontainment, making it ideal for the separation of mammalian cell culture, ARIES rotors incorporate "Smart Balance" technology, which automatically corrects for imbalances, resulting in faster throughput, ease of operation and decreased wear and tear on the centrifuge drive.

For GMP compliance, the Avanti J-HC offering includes optional SpinTrace II network software for automated data collection from up to 32 Avanti J centrifuges. The SpinTrace network software can store all the run programs and create a database for QC documentation.

New CE Software on NT Platform Improves Accuracy of Compound Identification

Beckman Coulter has introduced 32 Karat Software for its P/ACE[TM] MDQ Capillary Electrophoresis Systems. Designed to address the demands of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, this new platform will help users comply with FDA regulations such as 21 CFR part 11, concerning electronic data records and signatures. The 32 Karat for CE also provides powerful new capabilities for analyte identification.

This new CE software is an extension of the 32 Karat platform that Beckman Coulter first introduced for HPLC early last year. Developed entirely in 32-bit code, the platform fully utilizes the functionality of Windows NT. This software preserves the integrity of data with features such as user-specific log-in, independent audit trails, and results sign-off.

In addition to extending the 32 Karat platform to CE, this new software adds analysis dimensions that significantly increase the accuracy of compound identification. New peak identification algorithms allow the P/ACE MDQ to combine an analyte's mobility with spectral information for accurate identification against a large database of drugs.
