The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store has been unveiled by computer company Apple, enabling music fans to browse, search, preview, buy and download albums and songs from its iTunes Music Store over a Wi-Fi network, directly to their iPod touch or iPhone device.
Apple said users will be able to enjoy their music purchases on their iPod touch or iPhone device immediately, without the need for a computer, while benefiting from the same prices and selection as the regular iTunes Store. Downloaded music will sync back into their iTunes library automatically when the user connects the device back to their computer, with the computer completing any downloads that have only been partially completed on the device.
In addition, Apple announced that it has formed a partnership with coffee company Starbucks, enabling customers to access and purchase from the Wi-Fi Music Store at participating Starbucks locations.
The companies said a customer's device will recognise the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store automatically when entering a participating location. The service will be introduced at 600+ Starbucks company-operated locations in New York and Seattle on 2 October, with further roll-outs for San Francisco Bay, Los Angeles, Chicago and other US markets in 2007-2008.
Apple has also enabled iTunes customers to create custom ringtones by selecting up to a 30 second segment from any of 1m+ songs on iTunes and has released the next generation iTunes 7.4 as a free download from http://www.iTunes.com.
