Apple iPhone 6, 2014 Macbook Pro and Air Release to Feature Advanced Radial Menu Design: Top Killer Features to Expect.
The US Patent & Trademark Office published another Apple patent last March 20, 2014. According to the patent, Apple has been working on the use of a common radial style menu system. The system will be available for bother Macs and iOS devices.
The previous week, Google applied for a patent describing a similar advanced radial menu design for future use in Android devices. At the present time, South Korean tech giant Samsung is the only company that has released successful the radial menu mobile devices.
Apple's initial bid for a radial menu patent can be traced back in November 2010. According to a report by Patently Apple, the patent describes the use of new menus that can be adapted on both operating systems of Apple: iOS and Mac. Following that, the next patent sighting was in June 2012.
Another Apple patent surfaced describing the use of radial menus. According to the document, the radial menus can be used with a digital pen. It works in a similar way as Samsung's "Air Command."
The current Apple patent reported goes by the number 20140082557. It looks at radial menus once more. This suggests that Apple has not given up on the technology. According to the abstract of the patent:
"Some embodiments of the invention provide several novel techniques for manipulating radial menus in graphical user interfaces of an application. In some embodiments, radial menus include multiple selectable items arranged about an internal location (e.g., a center of the radial menu)."
"The novel radial menu techniques of some embodiments include (i) non-uniform spacing of menu items, (ii) the use of shading or highlighting within a region associated with an item to indicate the present selectability of the item, and (iii) the use of radial gestures for opening sub-menus and the subsequent display of the sub-menu."
Apple has yet to make an announcement about the final features of its upcoming products.
