Appeal over abortion law.

The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales was today urging the Government to change the law on abortion.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor was holding a private meeting with Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt and it is understood he was asking her to lower the current 24-week time limit for abortions.

Racist attack

A seven-year-old boy was attacked by a racist thug because he was wearing an England football top. Hugo Clapshaw had been enjoying a game of soccer with his father in Edinburgh when a man shouted abuse and hit him.

Revenge fear

Palestinian militant groups today vowed to carry out revenge attacks against Israel after an Israeli air strike killed three Palestinian children. "The reprisal is coming soon," said Abu Qussa, a spokesman for the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades.

Litter louts

Eastbourne is home to a flock of unruly seagulls who rip open rubbish bags left on the pavement and distribute the contents liberally around the town. The council is asking residents to put bin bags in wheelie bins or pay a pounds 75 fixed penalty fine for committing an "anti-social crime".

Vote on strike

Firefighters in Cleveland have started voting on whether to take industrial action in a dispute over jobs. The Fire Brigades' Union said the ballot was going ahead in protest at cuts which would involve fire stations being downgraded and 66 frontline posts axed.

Blackout fury

Students at a Chinese university set fires and smashed equipment in a protest at power cuts during World Cup games. Up to 9,000 took part in the protests at Sichuan University where an official said the midnight power cuts were deliberate to ensure students got enough rest.
