Anti-Oxidants Are Not All The Same.

Lifestyle Editors

BATESVILLE, Ark.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2000

Dr. Jack Masquelier, in order to clear up any confusion, has issued a Certificate of Authenticity to Life Plus(R) International for Proanthenols Bio-Complex(R) and other products they manufacture using his patented extraction process.

Dr. Masquelier is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Bordeaux. He is highly respected throughout the scientific community and is the world's leading authority on OPC. He has produced more than 200 publications. Many successful pharmaceutical products originated from his patented inventions.

The Certificate reads as follows: This Joint Certificate of Authenticity assures that the Oligomeric ProanthoCyanidins (OPCs) contained in Proanthenols Bio-Complex(R) and other products manufactured and distributed by Life Plus(R) International contain The Real OPCs as originally isolated by Professor Dr. Jack Masquelier at the University of Bordeaux, France and supplied worldwide by International Nutrition Company (INC) of Vaduz, Liechtenstein, in the USA and many other countries under INC's trademark MASQUELIER'S(R) Original OPCs and in France and certain other countries around the world as INC's authentic MASQUELIER'S(R) Pycnogenol(R).

The real Masquelier's(TM) Original OPCs used in Life Plus products are protected under U.S. Patent No. 4,698,360 and extracted for INC by Berkem s.a., an International Standards Organization (ISO-9002) quality certified facility. Berkem is licensed by the French Ministry of Health to produce this high quality, pharmaceutical-grade OPC extract, employing state-of-the-art methods developed on the basis of Professor Masquelier's French extraction patents and further perfected on an industrial scale by Berkem Laboratories.

Masquelier's Original OPCs, the real OPC extract used by Life Plus, is the 100 percent Bioavailable and 100 percent Residue-Free extract that has been proven beneficial to human health through nearly 50 years of clinical research and worldwide use.

The certificate contains the signatures of both the president of Berkem Laboratories Lucien Fahy and Dr. Masquelier.

In the last few years the importance of free radical scavengers (antioxidants) has become increasingly evident. Most scientists now agree that free radicals can be responsible for damage to our cells. This damage often manifests itself as premature aging of the skin and other organs. A new study by the United States Department of Agriculture adds to the scientific body of evidence. According to the USDA study, published in the September 15, 1999 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, a diet rich in blueberry extract reversed some loss of balance and coordination, and improved short-term memory in aging rats. Among the highest fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables in antioxidant power, blueberries are being studied more closely by researchers for their documented anti-aging potential.

It could be said that the father of all this research on antioxidants and their behavior is Dr. Jack Masquelier. Dr. Masquelier isolated his first OPC in 1947. It is a well known story how he perfected a vegetable extraction process with an end product he called pycnogenols. It was his intention that pycnogenols be used to designate the totality of the extract that was obtained using his patented methods of extraction.

Since then, the name pycnogenols has been used by some companies regardless of the extraction process. The acronym OPC has been bantered about the industry as well.

This confusion has created problems for consumers that are interested in taking advantage of Dr. Masquelier's years of knowledge and research by including his antioxidants in their diet.
