Annual bibliography of film studies--2013.

Introduction

While a bit later than usual, the 2013 edition of Post Script's Annual Bibliography of Film Studies still hopes to offer a timely point of access to the latest film and media criticism, along with some small insight into current directions in the area. We might begin by noting a recent development in journal publishing. Several times in the last few years we have remarked on the rapid increase in the number of highly specialized journals publishing in film and media studies, many sponsored by Intellect Books. This year's Bibliography chronicles not quite a scaling back in the number of those journals, but a shift in publishers, as Intellect has now ceded more than half of those relatively new publications to Taylor and Francis--a move that could raise a question about the viability of so many pointedly academic and specialized journals. At a time when other venues are disappearing or--as in the case of the venerable Film Criticism--shifting to an online presence only, this development raises some concern about the direction of print film criticism.

As is customary for each issue of the Bibliography, we like to note some of the specific trends appearing in the recent year's body of criticism--trends usually tracked by noting the various special topics that journals take on in the year, and by observing the sheer number of articles in the Bibliography's various categories, weighed against the numbers found in previous years' editions. In 2013 among the various special issues we might note are: Adaptation's issue devoted to Transmedia Storytelling and Participatory Culture, Criticism's number on Cross-Media Melodrama, Film Quarterly's rare special issue dedicated to the 2012 documentary The Act of Killing, the Journal of Film and Video's issue devoted to Media Writing, Journal of Scandinavian Cinema's number focused on Christmas films, Post Script's own special issue on Irish and Early American Cinema, Studies in Eastern European Cinema's number devoted to the neglected Polish director Wojciech Has, Studies in European Cinema's issue on French Women Filmmakers, and Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinema's number on Transitions in Hispanic Cinema. While not, strictly speaking, a "special topic," Film Comment's special issue celebrating its fiftieth year of publication deserves a special note. While the journal has several times changed its format during its half-century of existence, this seminal periodical has always served as an important bridge between popular film criticism and academic discourse, and its continued success in this vein reminds us of what holds firm in the midst of the many trends that mark the changing world of film criticism.

While not as large as last year's Bibliography--which was our largest to date--the 2013 edition comes in only slightly behind that record setter. While most categories come in very near their numbers as those of last year, the "International" category has seen a significant drop in entries of approximately 20 per cent. That change is at least partially traceable to fewer articles in some of the relatively new journals dedicated to various nationalities or niche topics of film production and criticism. Meanwhile, relatively large increases in more subject-driven categories--"Documentary," "Film History," and "Special Topics"--have kept the overall number of Bibliography entries high.

Post Script has now published its Annual Bibliography for thirty two-consecutive years--a reminder of both the journal's longevity and the presumed usefulness of this feature. During that time the format has, with several minor additions (particularly added categories), remained much the same. We continue to limit the Bibliography to English-language film articles, giving each a single full citation, based on current MLA style, while also cross-listing many of the entries to one or more additional categories and, where necessary, offering a brief annotation to the entries. With the exception of the "Actors/Actresses" and "Directors" categories, all entries are alphabetized according to the authors' last names. The listing of "Periodicals Indexed" does not indicate all of the journals consulted for the year, only those in which we have noted film or video-related articles. And as in the past, we welcome suggestions for streamlining the format, adding journals, or using other categories, while we also welcome a note of attention to titles of articles or special journal issues that should be included in subsequent editions of the Bibliography.

Once again I need to thank a number of colleagues for helping me compile this research tool. Our Research Assistant Laura Cathrine of Texas A&M-Commerce, again carried a heavy burden in assembling this year's entries, and my co-editor Gerald Duchovnay exercised his usual patience and guidance with the process. Special appreciation goes to my IT specialist at Georgia Tech, Grantley Bailey, who effectively saved the day when my computer suffered a near-fatal problem during work on this year's Bibliography.
