Annual Bibliography of Film Studies-2016.

INTRODUCTION

In compiling the Post Script Annual Bibliography I have the opportunity to observe some of the more specific trends and changes that are occurring in film and video research and publishing. One change that seems especially noteworthy because of the way it speaks to the very nature of academic publishing is the move of some journals to a completely online format and distribution--and in some cases free access. In last year's "Introduction" I noted that one of the older and most respected academic journals, Literature/Film Quarterly, had announced it would be shifting venue to become an online, open-access journal. This issue of the Bibliography surveys the last of LFQ's regular print issues. The past year has also seen a similar announcement from a much younger journal focused in the same area, that of adaptation studies. The Oxford University Press-sponsored Adaptation begins online only publication in 2018, although access seems to be via subscription. Other journals will surely follow, especially as demand for libraries to provide online access increases. One of the questions they will all have to answer is whether they can maintain the same standards of scholarship, and especially whether the acceptance/submission ratio remains approximately the same. The tendency I have noted in some online only journals is that they are publishing far more pieces, suggesting, perhaps, that they are using the cheaper format to eliminate some of their "accepted" backlog, but also at least hinting that, for whatever reason, more work is being accepted.

In the introduction to each year's edition of the Bibliography, we also usually track a few other trends in scholarship and critical writing. One of those developments is the variation in special topics issues which most academic journals, even the highly specialized ones, commonly feature. Some of the special numbers for 2016 that are of particular note include the following: American Imago's portfolio of essays on Bergman's Wild Strawberries, Film Quarterly's issue on the Brazilian documentarist Eduardo Coutinho, the Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television's number on early film theory, the Journal of Film and Video's issue devoted to television performance, Post Script's issue dedicated to the neglected French director Jacques Demy, Science Fiction Film and Television's examination of "Star Trek at 50," Screen's issue devoted to "Situating Television Studies," South Central Review's special number on French cinema, Studies in the Humanities' issue on youth culture in film and television, and Substance's number devoted to "Film and / as Ethics." As usual, I do not want to suggest that the special numbers noted here are the only ones that appeared in 2016, but rather that these seem particularly significant because they address overlooked or recently neglected areas in film and media studies, while also pointing up some of the new directions film scholarship and discussions are taking.

With the exception of Film Criticism, which is in the process of moving to an online presence, the journals indexed for this year's Bibliography remain the same, although the total number of entries has slightly increased. The "International" category continues to lead in the number of entries, thanks to the many journals that have a specifically global thrust, such as Asian Cinema, Film International, Journal of Scandinavian Cinema, and Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinema. Notable decreases are in the areas of "Film Music," "Genre," and "Directors," with the last of these seeing the largest drop in entries of approximately thirteen percent. Major increases over the previous edition show up in the "Documentary," "Independent and Experimental," "Technology," and "Video" categories, with the "Technology" group showing an especially significant gain of more than thirty percent.

As for most of its history, the categories and general format of this year's Annual Bibliography remain unchanged. All citations employ MLA format, the Bibliography is limited to English-language film articles, most of the entries include cross-listing to one or more additional categories and, where necessary, a brief annotation has been added to the entries. Except for the "Actors /Actresses" and "Directors" categories, all entries are alphabetized according to the authors' last names. We would also note that the list of "Periodicals Indexed" which follows does not indicate all of the journals surveyed for the year, only those in which we have found film or video-related articles appropriate to this research tool. And as in the past, we welcome suggestions for improving the format, introducing other categories, or noting specific articles or journals that should be included in subsequent editions of the Bibiiography.

I would like to thank a number of colleagues whose contributions have been essential to creating this edition of our annual research tool. Post Script's Research Assistant Laura Cathrine, an independent scholar, has been both reliable and painstaking in the indexing of most of the international journals for this year's Bibliography, while my co-editor Gerald Duchovnay has, as usual, helped fill in gaps in my own coverage and prodded the project to a timely completion. I also need to thank Melanie Richards and Grantley Bailey, our IT specialists at Georgia Tech, for their technical assistance, and Richard Utz, Chair of Tech's School of Literature, Media, and Communication, for his continued support of the journal.
