Annual Bibliography of Film Studies--2012.

As with its past editions, the 2012 version of Post Script's Annual Bibliography of Film Studies hopes to provide not only an easy point of access to the latest film and media criticism, but also a rough measure of some recent trends in the field. In last year's installment, we noted a sharp increase in the number of journals publishing in film and media studies, in part due to the commitment of Intellect Books over the last few years to provide a wide variety of outlets for specialized film publishing. One result was venues devoted to such previously underserved international areas as Australasian cinema, Eastern European cinema, Scandinavian cinema, and Japanese and Korean cinema; another was, rather naturally, an explosion in the general number of articles being published on film and related media. Yet as we also noted, most of those new journals were having trouble meeting their official publication schedules. With this year's edition we can note that most of those periodicals are now catching up with their announced schedules, offering a wealth of commentary on the world of cinema and media studies, and in the process bringing many new voices into the discussion of global cinema. We can only hope that Intellect is able to sustain the support of so many highly focused--and, we should note, handsomely produced--publications.

A closely allied goal for each issue of the Bibliography is to observe some of the specific trends emerging in the ever-growing volume of criticism. One approach to this goal is to consider the various special topics that journals take on in the year, while another, and perhaps more telling approach, is to weight the sheer number of articles in the various categories of the Bibliography against those in the same categories in previous years. For 2012 some of the special numbers we might call attention to are the following: Film International's issue devoted to the New Romanian Cinema, Film History's issue of reprints of source material for films from 1896 to 1912, Journal of Popular Film and Television's numbers on Eastern European television, and on "television as text," Post Script's own special issues on Woody Allen and on Masculinity in Spanish Film, Science Fiction Film and Television's issue on the landmark series Battlestar Galactica, Studies in Documentary Film's issue devoted to Israeli documentary, Studies in French Cinema's number on women directors in recent French film, the "Children in Hispanic Cinema" issue of Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinema, and Velvet Light Trap's special number on animation. Of course, these are not the only special numbers, but their heavy emphasis on various aspects of international cinema is worth noting, even though it too might largely be a function of that expanded number of journals devoted to world film.

As was the case last year, when we noted with a bit of surprise the growing size of the Bibliography--it was our largest yet--so must we also observe that pattern's continuation this year. This latest edition is now our largest, offering 145 more entries than our last. But while last year's greatly increased numbers were spread fairly evenly throughout the Bibliography's various categories, this year we find a tremendous increase in the one area already noted above, as the "International" category grew by 109 entries. In one respect that number is not surprising, since we have registered the highest numbers in the "International" area for several years running, usually followed closely by "Directors" studies. While these two categories continue to lead in overall numbers, the former nearly doubled the size of the latter this year, suggesting a rapidly growing interest in global cinema, an increase in venues specializing in international concerns, and a rising number of scholars focusing their research on those concerns.

With this edition, Post Script's Annual Bibliography marks its thirty-first year of publication. For most of that time it has retained much the same format, since it continues to seem useful to both the compilers and readers. This year, however, we have added a new category, one dedicated to "Film Music." Despite the emergence of a great number of articles and journals focused on global cinema, English remains the dominant language of this criticism, so we continue to limit the Bibliography to English-language film articles, each one receiving a single full citation, based on current MLA style, and with many of the entries also being cross-listed to one or more additional categories. As necessary, we provide a brief annotation to the entries, and except in the cases of the "Actors/Actresses" and "Directors" categories, all entries are alphabetized according to the authors' last names. The listing of "Periodicals Indexed" continues to grow, and in that listing we provide abbreviations for all of the journals cited in the article listings. As in the past, we invite suggestions for streamlining the format, adding additional journals, or employing other categories, while we also welcome titles of entries--of articles or journals--that we might include in what we assume will be the next year's edition.

As in the past, I have been fortunate enough to have the help of a number of colleagues in putting together this research tool. Let me especially offer thanks to our new Research Assistant Laura Cathrine of Texas A&M-Commerce, as well as to my co-editor Gerald Duchovnay. Without the help of these and others, the Annual Bibliography could not be produced in a timely fashion.
