Anne tells of the debt she owes the ECHO.

Byline: CLAIRE TOLLEY

ANNE Robinson says a job at the Liverpool ECHO helped resurrect her career after she had plumbed the depths of alcoholism.

In her autobiography, Memoirs of an Unfit Mother, she tells how her column in the Liverpool ECHO began when she was 36.

It followed a period in her life during which a judge branded her an unfit mother and denied her custody of her daughter.

Afterwards, the Liverpool-born journalist admitted she lied about receiving joint custody of her daughter Emma in the '70s to save face.

She said: "I can still wake up now with a sense of shame.

"It's a very long-term bereavement because there's no day when you're not reminded of your inadequacy and your sin."

Ms Robinson says seeing her daughter every other weekend was like prison visiting.

She adds that Emma's approval is now the only one she craves: "How high would you like Mummy to jump, darling?

"I can't quite believe that I nearly died and now we're so happy.

And Emma, despite the childhood I gave her, well, she's OK, no, she's fantastic.

"I keep telling her, 'I'll love you whatever you do'."

The book chronicles her early Catholic upbringing in Liverpool, the dark years of alcoholism, through to life as consumer champion on TV's Watchdog and her ultimate reincarnation as the Queen of Mean on The Weakest Link.

Memoirs of an Unfit Mother will be in shops from October 18.
