Annan to brief UNGA on Syria soon - Al Nasser.

| UNITED NATIONS, April 3 (KUNA) -- General Assembly President Nassir Al Nasser of Qatar on Tuesday said he invited the UN-Arab League Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan to brief the Assembly on his mediation efforts "as soon as possible.

" Al Nasser told a press conference that he spoke to Annan yesterday and suggested that the briefing take place on the 12 or 13 of this month, and given Annan's tight schedule that the briefing take place via video conference.

He said he expected an answer from Annan today or tomorrow.

Annan's mandate was created by the Assembly in mid February after Russia and China vetoed a resolution which called among other things the appointment of an Envoy for Syria.

He said "we have all heard the new date of April 10th when the Syrian government must cease all troop movements, cease the use of heavy weapons againt its own citizens ... The world is watching." "The violence and the killings must stop immediately. The Syrian government must now cooperate fully with Mr. Annan and his team, for the sake of the Syrian people. The government's opponents must also cooperate with Mr. Annan and his team," he added. Al Nasser also announced that he will co-chair with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on May 17 and 18 a high-level thematic debate on the State of the World Economy in an attempt to contribute to the international efforts to secure a sustained, inclusive and equitable recovery of the world economy.

On May 23rd, he added, he will convene an informal high-level meeting of the Assembly on "the role of Member States in mediation." (end) KUNA 032000 Apr 12NNNN
