Anixter Partners with Ascend as an Authorized Service Provider; Ascend and Anixter Jointly Broaden World-Class Service Initiative to Provide Higher Levels of Support to Their Customers.

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) today announced that Anixter Inc., a $2.5 billion value-added provider of integrated communications systems and services, will be one of the first corporate partners to become a Tier II Ascend Authorized Service Provider (ASP). As an ASP, Anixter will deliver the most comprehensive Ascend service and support package available to customers, ensuring timely and thorough solutions for all Ascend products.

Anixter's complete portfolio of support services from Ascend complements the services Anixter provides through its own Customer Support Center and network engineering group, from installation to telephone assistance and ongoing maintenance. Additionally, the Ascend ASP designation allows Anixter to leverage the investments Ascend has made in software maintenance programs.

"Ascend and Anixter's mutual goal is to provide best-in-class products and best-in-class service to help customers deploy new technologies for remote access and corporate Internet/Intranet solutions to be more competitive," said Art Hoffman, vice-president of Ascend's channel sales. "The synergy of this partnership will enable us to offer customers a complete portfolio of products and services to solve even their most complex networking needs."

A key focus of Anixter is to assist corporate customers with implementing intranet solutions using Ascend's remote access equipment. Through the ASP program, Anixter will broaden its ability to service the growing needs of companies that are looking at designing, building and maintaining complex intranet technology solutions.

"Implementing high-end intranet technology requires sophisticated network design and support," said Anixter executive vice president Bob DeBolt. "Our partnership with Ascend benefits our customers by enhancing the scope of Anixter's extensive technical-resource capabilities and quality service programs."
