Angling: TAKE A 'BOW.

TWO Lake of Menteith crackers which looked more like silvery grilse than rainbows, helped Dalgety Bay angler George Mathieson gain a place in the final of the Daily Record Champion of Champions.

The rainbows tipped the scales at 10lb - the biggest being a six-pounder - and, along with three smaller ones, helped to earn George's club, CSSA Rosyth, a place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Club Championships.

It was a pretty hard night on the lake, with 43 anglers returning just 63 rainbows weighing at total of 127lb 8oz. But, like the previous heat, it was a night of superbly conditioned big fish.

The heaviest, just two ounces bigger than George's, won captor Aaron Cannon, of the Stanley and District Angling Club, a bottle of Famous Grouse Whisky.

Like ex-civil servant George's fish, it was capped at 4lbs for competition weigh-in purposes .

The 69-year-old said: "The quality of these Menteith rainbows is absolutely first rate. My two looked just like small salmon."

George spent the evening not only chopping and changing lines, but moving from drift to drift, starting near Dog Island, moving to the Rookery then, after catching just one fish, ended up at International Bay, where many of the boats were congregating. He started with a midge-tip line, changed to a shorter sink tip, and then put on a full floater.

George said: "There were fish moving all over the place sipping flies from the surface but, despite that, they proved to be difficult to catch.

"I was using four flies - Diawl Bachs and a Wickham's Fancy, all in size 12s on a long cast - and soon found out that the only way to tempt anything was to cast towards a moving fish and do nothing.

"The flies were allowed to drop down just a few inches, certainly no more than a foot, when they were taken."

The Club Championship is the flagship competition of SANA, the ruling body of game angling in Scotland.

Along with the Champion of Champions for individual anglers, it is sponsored by the Daily Record and Martin Grantham, of the Angling Centre in Stirling.
