Angling: Homemade lure snares record pike; ANGLING: Latest news and results.

Byline: By Gareth Purnell

RAVENSTHORPE Reservoir has produced this magnificent 40lb-plus pike to fly angler John Sturge.

The 5ft long female bottomed out a set of 40lb Avons and could even have challenged the British record of 46lb 13oz had it been weighed on big enough scales.

As it is, the fish sets a new record for the Northants trout water, beating the 39lb 10oz fish taken by Adrian Gibbard in November.

John (64) had just changed his fly to a home-tied size 10, 2.5in long Black Rabbit Zonker with a green body and fluorescent green eyes when his line went solid.

"At first I thought I'd hooked the bottom but I kept pulling and something started coming towards me," said John.

"I thought I must have hooked a big branch, but when I got it to the side of the boat it started going sideways and that's when I realised I'd hooked a big fish.

"After about 10 minutes it came to the surface, followed by a couple of smaller pike. My fishing pal George Iafrate wasn't sure which fish to net, but luckily he went for the biggest one in the middle!"

John, who had booked a package at the Anglian Water hotspot, had an incredible three-day session, also adding a personal best 12lb 8oz rainbow trout and another pike of 31lb. He used a 7/8 WT Hardy trout rod, 8-WT floating fly line and an 8lb fluorocarbon leader.

"It didn't just slowly reach the scale limit, it slammed round in a thud," he added. "It was at least 42lb and could have been 45lb or 46lb."
