A TRAPPED fisherman who feared he was about to drown chopped off two of his fingers - seconds before rescuers arrived to help him.

William Messenger's hand was pinned between his sinking boat and a log.

The 51-year-old decided he could not wait any longer for help so cut off his fingertips with a knife.

But soon after his future son-in-law Jarrad Todd arrived with rescuers at Wynoochee River in Seattle, Washington.

Under-sheriff Rick Scott, said: "If he'd known help was not far away, he might have held off."

Last night, he was satisfactory in hospital.
