Andrew boosts ranking with top showing.

ANDREW ATKINSON did his ranking no harm whatsoever by battling through against higher-level opponents to reach the final of the Sheffield Open Under 18 tournament.

While unseeded Atkinson lost in the showpiece 6-2 6-0 to Ewan Moore, his earlier performances were excellent and matched his form of the whole summer for Thongsbridge Tennis Club.

In the first round, Atkinson knocked out No4 seed Peter O'Donovan 6-1 6-3, and then he went on to beat Robert Leck 6-3 6-2 to book a clash with No1 seed Ruben Henry in the semi-finals.

In a very tough match lasting almost two hours, Atkinson came through in a final-set match tie break 3-6, 7-6, 10-5. The 10 and Under and 12 and Under age groups competed in the Winter Regional Tour rounds, with the winners of each tournament qualifying for the Winter National Tournament.

Barney Fitzpatrick from Thongsbridge travelled to Birchwood, Lancashire, and started very brightly. He convincingly knocked out No3 seed Ben Nichol 6-2, 6-0 in the first round before facing Matthew Harrison in the quarter-finals - a top player in the summer. Fitzpatrick put on the performance of the season and won in a match tie break 5-7, 6-4, 10-8. In the semi-finals, Fitzpatrick seemed the victim of some dubious line calls at crucial times against Moezz Fletchman, losing 7-5, 5-7, 8-10.

Sisters Charlotte and Lucy Margetson played in the 10U and 12U girls Winter Regional Tours in Leeds.

Charlotte was very unlucky as she got injured in her first match and had to withdraw.

Lucy put on a spirited performance, winning a match in the consolation draw and finishing 14th.

Robert Sandiford had a good win in a tight draw of eight players in the 10U boys Winter Regional Tour in Graves.
