Andrew Collinge's hair clinic.

Q: I am 32 and have thick hair with a natural wave in the back. It drives me absolutely crazy as it means I cannot have it all one length because it looks like a thatched cottage. But if I opt for layers the back looks like a 1970s feather cut. Help! - Helen Nielsen, Exmouth, Devon.

AC: I suggest you keep the top layers long and have the underneath layers thinned out. The cutting technique is called texturising and this will reduce the thickness of your hair without losing the length. To make your hair more manageable, use Andrew Collinge Re-Moisturising Shampoo and Conditioner, both pounds 2.99 for 200 ml. This will make the hair more supple and easier to style.

Q: I have very fine hair which is layered on top to give it height. I am 60 years old and my face is a round moon shape. I would like a modern style, but nothing that makes me look too young - Doreen Williams, Stockport.

AC: With a round face it is important to avoid short, blunt fringes and heavy bobs. Opt for something that has soft and textured edges with some hair on the face to break up the roundness. To get a more modem style grow the top layers and, if you need extra height, just perm your hair around the crown area.

Q: I have grey hair and used to be able to get a blue rinse, which I liked. But these seem to have disappeared and all the alternatives like ash blonde just don't have the same effect. - Mrs DJ Banks, Enfield, Mddx.

AC: There is a product by Roux, called Fanci-ful - ask your hairdresser to contact their local wholesaler. Alternatively, Wella Accord have colour setting lotions including Anthracite Grey, which will give your hair a blue-salty hue.
