And the rest is history; Conjure up olde-worlde magic in the bedroom by adding charming, ornate pieces then updating the style with luxurious bed linen and shaggy rugs.

TRADE SECRETS

Give the illusion of being a traveller from the golden age with studded mock-leather luggage-style drawers.

Tuck in sheets and duvet under the mattress. It will reduce the space your bed takes up in a small bedroom.

Ditch bedroom carpet in favour of patterned ceramic floor tiles so that there will be no hiding place for dust mites.

Warm bare toes by laying a shaggy rug either side of the bed, unless you need the shock of a chilly floor to wake you up.

Hang full-length curtains from ceiling to floor. They'll help to keep out draughts and noise, as well as helping to make a narrow room appear taller.

Choose crisp, white cotton bed linen in the highest thread count you can afford. It looks great and feels even better.

Hang an oversized canvas panel on the wall behind your bed in lieu of a headboard.

Have wall lights fitted with a switch at bed height - it will free up precious space on your bedside table.

Remember, a pendant ceiling light with half a dozen arms will be six times brighter than a single bulb (but running costs rise accordingly).

TOP TIP

Use curtain tie-backs to stop drapes blocking all that lovely sunshine when it does decide to put in an appearance.
