And now, even greater news for hot dog lovers.

In our August issue, we reported on two brands of hot dogs that were uncommonly low in fat and calories. If you've tried them and liked them, you may want to have a go at the latest and most revolutionary canine to hit the market possibly the first fat-free frank in history.

Lightlife Fat-Free Meatless Smart Dogs (if you can digest the name, you should be able to digest the contents) are a remarkable product, even if hot dog purists may not give them high marks. We haven't tried them yet, but some who have were not im- pressed with their taste or texture. They also apparently tend to get rubbery when they cool down, but shouldn't one eat a hot dog hot anyway?

Made from soy protein, wheat gluten, and lots of low-calorie water, Smart Dogs are flavored with salt (a mere 290 mg per 1.5 ounce frank) and natural flavors from vegetable sources. Their red color comes from beet juice concentrate, not nitrite, and there is no MSG or HVP (hydrolyzed vegetable protein). In short, they're the answer to a hot-dog-loving vegetarian's prayer--and should taste just fine with whatever condiments you prefer on a soft, complex carbohydrate bun.

By the way, the term "frankfurter" comes from the German city of its origin, just as "wiener" is named after Wien (the German spelling of Vienna, Austria). "Wiener" is the short form of Wiener Wurst, or "Viennese sausage." Whatever the origin, and whether wiener or frank, the good old American "hot dog" is the product people around the world continue to ask for when they want to eat sausages in a bun.

HEALTH RECIPE OF THE MONTH CaJun Marinated Shrimp (Makes 18-20 appetizers)

1 pound extra large shrimp (18-20 per pound). shelled and deveined

1 tablespoon lime juice

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon thyme leaves, crushed

1/4 teaspoon salt (optional)

1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper

1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

In medium bowl, toss shrimp with lime juice. In custard cup, combine garlic and onion powders, thyme, and red and black peppers. Sprinkle spice mixture over shrimp; stir to coat shrimp evenly. Spray large skillet with nonstick cooking spray; heat until hot. Add shrimp; cook and stir until shrimp are pink, about 3 minutes. place shrimp in serving bowl; cover and refrigerate until cold. about 1 hour. Just before serving, garnish with lime wedges, if desired. This recipe may be doubled. Per Serving (1 shrimp): Calories: 27 Sodium: 38 mg Protein: 5.0 gm Cholesterol: 38 mg Fat: 0.4 gm Carbohydrate: 0.4 gm Diabetic exchanges: 1/2 low-fat meat (but high in cholesterol)
