Anchor Brewing & Distilling creates vodka from hops.
David King, president of Anchor Distilling, recalls that when he started working at Anchor in 2011, he was "immediately mesmerized" by the aroma of hops wafting from Anchor's brewery. He remembered thinking, "We have all these hops and a distillery on site, why not combine the two?"
Anchor head distiller Bruce Joseph and Anchor brewmaster Mark Carpenter, two of the creators of Old Potrero Whiskey and Junipero Gin, developed Hophead Vodka using Anchor's small copper pot stills and two varieties of hops used in the brewery.
"We've been looking to add a vodka to our portfolio for quite some time, but couldn't seem to find the right fit," Mr. King said, "so we decided to distill our own, blending the history and heritage of our brewery and distillery, creating an amazing liquid that fits perfectly in our portfolio of craft spirits."
Mr. King noted that Hophead is not simply a flavored vodka. "It's a vodka built on flavor, that captures the fresh, aromatic character of hops without the typical bitterness."
Anchor Hophead Vodka contains 45% ABV and has a suggested retail price of $29.99. It will be available in San Francisco, New York City and other select markets.
