Anaesthesia and Intensive Care A-Z. Fourth Edition.

Anaesthesia and Intensive Care A-Z. Fourth Edition. S. M. Yentis, N. P. Hirsch, G. B. Smith; Churchill Livingstone; Distributer: Elsevier Australia--shop.elsevier.com.au, Tower 1, 475 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood, NSW 2067; $190.00; 200x270 mm; pp. 569; ISBN 13: 9780443067853.

The fourth edition of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care A-Z retains the format of the previous edition published five years ago. As the subtitle states, it truly is an "Encyclopaedia of Principles and Practice". It continues to be an original and comprehensive updated source of information, not only for clinical anaesthesia, but for related and relevant topics including pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and history of anaesthesia.

Entries are arranged alphabetically, are concise and cross-referenced. In keeping with advances in knowledge, new entries have been added and existing ones revised.

Illustrations are few, presumably to limit the book size, but I believe this does not distract from its usefulness and appeal. It is an easy-to-read, well constructed modern text.

This is a unique book. It deserves a prominent position in the Anaesthetic Department Library and operating theatre complex. where it will be extremely valuable to a wide anaesthetic readership, particularly trainees.
