Maharashtra, March 29 -- The marine turtle conservation movement has been underway in Maharashtra since a decade. The conservation of marine life is a very important aspect of nature. Considering the importance of sea turtles in the ecosystem, the Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra undertook protection of marine turtles and their eggs and ensured the subsequent safe release of their hatchlings. Creating a Turtle festival in Velas, a remote village in Mandangad taluka in Ratnagiri district the local communities have done a remarkable job. Velas hosts the nesting of the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles that migrate thousands of miles to lay their eggs on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Every year, several tourists visit these places to get a glimpse of this remarkable natural phenomenon. That the message of turtle conservation reaches a wider audience and the local community becomes stakeholders in conservation are the main objectives of this unique eco-tourism initiative.

Besides this, Murud, which is just a couple of hours away from Velas hosts the dolphin spotting festival, making it a must-see for nature lovers.

The local community at the Konkan coast of Maharshtra along with local NGO's such as the Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra and Kasav Mitra Mandal strive hard to preserve the marine life. Such small initiatives eventually create a large difference in the ecosystem. There would be various hardships they face.
