An exaltation of organists in Salt Lake City, June 17 to 21.

It speaks in a voice that rumbles, roars, whispers, and sighs. It's the magnificent pipe organ, and this month some 2,000 of its devotees will meet in Salt Lake City and give concerts, recitals, and competitions, many open to the public.

The American Guild of Organists' regional conference promises to be an event of some musical magnitude, more so since works of Johann Sebastian Bach will be performed in honor of his 300th birthday. A renowned organist himself, Bach composed organ fantasias, toccatas, fugues, and chorale preludes.

For some concerts, musicians will use one of the largest organs in the Wet--the Mormon Tabernacle's 189-rank Aeolian-Skinner organ. Free half-hour recitals are scheduled each day at 12:05.

On Monday afternoon starting at 1:30, winners from competitions throughout the Rocky Mountain region will compete; free performances are at the First Baptist Church at 8th South and 13th East streets. Free evening programs in the Tabernacle include a recital by Joan Lippincott on Wednesday and a concert by the Tabernacle Choir on Thursday.

To pick up a full schedule and view a display on the history of the organ, stop by the lobby of the Hotel Utah, Main STreet at South Temple Street. The Tabernacle is in Temple Square in the heart of downtown.
