An evening in wonderland.
The world premiere of the Wonderland Project will present a premier screening of films by 22 talented directors and performances of music by 13 leading composers, with Ashley Wass on piano and Matthew Trusler on the violin.
As part of the project, these 13 renowned composers were initially commissioned to write short pieces, each inspired by a different chapter (there are 12 chapters and a prefatory poem that make up Alice's work), to be performed in order so they follow the story's narrative.
Subsequently, the Pharos Arts Foundation and the International Motion Festival Cyprus held an open call for works where 13 different solo/teams of film-makers and animators from all over the world were selected, out of 127 applications, to create films corresponding to the music of each chapter. The result is a diverse, interesting and hugely exciting marrying of music and film.
Trusler was considered to be a "British virtuoso" by the Times after he graduated from Philadelphia's Curtis Institute in 1998. Since then he has developed a reputation as one of Britain's leading violinists, performing with many of the world's great orchestras, and receiving huge critical acclaim for his diverse recordings.
Performing on a bow once owned by Heifetz, Trusler has received particular acclaim for his performances of works from the 20th century, including concertos by Walton, Berg and Britten. His recording of concertos by Korngold and Rozsa with the Dusseldorf Symphony received 5 stars in BBC Music Magazine under the headline "Hotter than Heifetz?"
Wass, Professor of Piano at the Royal College of Music, London and the Artistic Director of the Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival, is firmly established as one of the leading performers of his generation. He is the only British winner of the London International Piano Competition, prize-winner at the Leeds Piano Competition, and a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist.
Increasingly in demand on the international stage, Wass has performed at many of the world's finest concert halls including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Concertgebouw and the Vienna Konzerthaus. He has performed as soloist with numerous leading ensembles, including all of the BBC orchestras, the Philharmonia, and Orchestre National de Lille.
He appeared in a gala concert at Buckingham Palace to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, a performance broadcast live to millions of viewers around the world.
The Wonderland films and music will be released on CD and DVD by Orchid Classics in March 2016. All profits from the release will go to the Lenny Trusler Children's Foundation -- a foundation dedicated to providing relief from suffering and illness in very sick babies and children.
Wonderland is intended to be the first of several projects designed to create a legacy of new music and film inspired by literature.
