Byline: By Ben Guy

This is the busy stretch of dual carriageway where a mother abandoned her two young children after a family argument.

The woman told the girls ( aged six and nine ( to get out of the car after a row over some forgotten dancing shoes and drove off.

Yesterday the 44-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was spared a jail sentence by magistrates in Hexham after they heard of the astonishing incident on the A69 near Newton in January.

The girls stood beside the 70mph road for 15 minutes before police, alerted by other drivers, picked them up.

One of the girls told police: "She drove off and didn't come back."

They were unable to contact the mother and their grandmother eventually reported them missing at 5.30pm.

Soon after, the mother arrived at the station and was arrested. She was fined pounds 2,000 and ordered to pay pounds 60 costs.
