An amazing Joseph.

The ever-adventurous Alan Jenkins has done it again - this time with a semi-choreographed concert version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which received a near-rapturous reception from the capacity audience at Honley Male Voice Choir's concert on Saturday.

With some colourful shirts to go with the theme, an abundance of rhythmic music from the Pyramid Show Band, and baritone Brian Winterbottom in fine voice as a characterful Joseph, the stage was set for some convincing singing and acting, bringing the Old Testament story to vivid life.

While the male singers dominated the action, guest soloist Beth Dale made a seductive Potiphar's wife, while girls from the Barbara Peters School of Dancing brought touches of youthful charm to some of the tuneful numbers.

There was strong support from other soloists, and a dramatic conclusion with Any Dream Will Do. Pat Graham directed the choreography.

The first half of the programme was devoted to the musical show repertoire, plus the famous duet from Bizet's opera The Pearl Fishers, with the voices of Philip Hardcastle (tenor) and Brian Winterbottom blending effectively.

While a selection from Paint Your Wagon held a few longueurs, the trauma and excitement of Les Miserables came through powerfully, with Danny Bullitt an admirably sensitive soloist in Bring Him Home and Brian Winterbottom putting in a splendid cameo in Master of the House.

Other first-half attractions were the dancing girls in some energetic routines to music from West Side Story and Beth Dale's evocative solos from A Chorus Line and Me and My Girl.

John Oldfield was accompanist and George Marsden the organist.
