An affair to remember; Susan Lee on why Wallis Simpson is still a fashion icon decades after a king chose her over his crown.

Byline: Susan Lee

SHE was once witheringly referred to in Royal circles as 'that woman'. Now, more than 70 years after Wallis Simpson caused one of the scandals of the century - and bagged a King in the process - her name as well as her unique style is back on everyone's lips.

With Madonna's new film, WE, due for release this week interest in the American divorcee who forced the abdication crisis is huge and that includes her fashion sense.

2012 is taking inspiration from her super svelte look of the '30s and '40s. Loo out for slim pencil skirts as well as nipped in waist print dressess, Peter pan and funnel neck collars and sharp-as-a-tack tailored jackets.

Trousers are either capri style or manish and loose and teamed with sheer blouses.

Accessorise with elegant strings of pearls, an eyecatching brooch and some vintage shades to complete the look.
