Ameron introduces: municipal fiberglass pipe. (First Look).
To be available in both round and nonround configurations, the new pipe is especially suited for the trenchless method of sliplining, but also is expected to be widely used on new construction projects, says Ameron's Robert Lux, district sales manager for the Non-Traditional Products Department of Ameron's Water Transmission Group.
Development of the pipe has been under way for more than 18 months. The pipe is expected to be on the market during the first quarter of 2004.
"Ameron will manufacture this pipe to fit existing sewers with cross-sectional dimensions of 36 inches and larger in shapes from round to near flat and convex," says Lux. "We will have the capability to produce slipline pipe that can be ordered to fit virtually every sewer shape in service. For sliplining, the pipe is designed to provide full structural and hydraulic load replacement of the existing pipe, while preserving maximum possible flow areas of the existing deteriorated pipe."
In addition, Lux says the new pipe can be designed for most public works applications, including conventional cut-and-cover construction. Pipe sections are joined together with watertight rubber gaskets to create a system that is leakfree, durable and corrosion resistant. Whether round or non-round pipe is needed, every configuration is specifically designed to meet individual project specifications and pressure and loading requirements.
Lux says that development of the new pipe is totally market driven. Several nationwide surveys were conducted to identify the features and benefits engineers, utility owners and operators and contractors expect in non-corrosive pipe for rehabilitation and new construction applications.
Compared to pipe made of other materials, Lux says that fiberglass pipe is more complex to design and produce. Therefore, studies were conducted to evaluate state-of-the-art technology for manufacturing this new product. Extensive testing to define appropriate materials and assess long-term performance behavior were made by the Ameron Corporate Research and Engineering staff in South Gate, CA, and at the company's Fiberglass Composite Pipe Group facilities in Burkburnett, TX, where the new fiberglass pipe will be manufactured.
While the new pipe's application is not limited to rehabilitation, Lux says the sewer market for non-round pipe is especially interesting and challenging, and appears to offer high potential for growth throughout the country.
"Most large sewer lines installed prior to the 1920s were hand-made by skilled craftsmen from monolithically-poured concrete or with brick and mortar," Lux observes. "Machines and efficient production methods for making large-diameter round pipe had not yet been perfected, so engineers designed pipe lines based on hydraulic and flow models, past experience and their own judgments with little concern for standard sections or shapes. They designed and constructed what they believed would be the most efficient systems, resulting in many varied and unusual sizes and shapes of pipes for the conveyance of sewage, storm water or a combination of the two substances."
Although well designed and constructed, the passage of time has caused many of these structures to deteriorate. Also, many of these pipelines are located in areas of older cities that are very congested, making excavation, removal and replacement impractical and extremely costly.
"Insertion of a new identically shaped but smaller and smoother structural replacement pipe inside the old pipe often is the most practical and cost effective solution," says Lux. "The varied shapes in which Ameron's new fiberglass pipe can be provided allows utility system owners to rehabilitate systems, regardless of the material or shape of the old structure."
