Americans on alert for heatwave; WEATHER.

A BRUTAL heatwave is set to hit Kansas over the next few days.

State officials are advising people to drink lots of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings and check on others. Three people have died from heat-related illnesses already this year and 240 have become ill, the Kansas health department said.

Temperatures are not expected to drop below 35C for at least a week with metropolitan areas under an excessive heat warning over the weekend.

National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Bowman said: "Hot is the word for the week."

Kansas city international airport hit 37C on Tuesday with temperatures today expected to reach 39C.
