Americans celebrate 75th anniversary of National Donut Day.
Enterprising Salvation Army volunteers during World War I made due with limited resources by frying the tasty treats in soldiers' head gear, sometimes just seven doughnuts at a time.
The volunteers, dubbed "Donut Lassies," served the sweets to American soldiers on the front lines in France.
Major Evan Hickman said that the doughnut was an easy and cheap way to satisfy a soldier's sweet tooth.
"Everyone loves comfort food, and the doughnut is a comfort food," the general secretary of the Salvation Army, Greater New York Division told the New York Daily News.
Entenmann's bakery is giving back to the charity organization by donating a dollar every time a person "likes" their Facebook page.
The baked goods company presented the Salvation Army with a 25,000-dollar check in Madison Square Park Friday. It also unveiled the largest box of doughnuts Entenmann's has ever created.
Doughnut fever has struck bakery chains across the country.
Dunkin' Donuts rang NASDAQ's opening bell Friday morning. The stock market, in turn, changed its name to "NASDDAQ" for the day.
The chain, famous for its Munchkin doughnut holes, gave away a doughnut with any beverage purchase.
Doughnut lovers could also get their glazed-doughnut fix for free at Krispy Kreme with no purchase necessary. The chain were set to ring NASDAQ's closing bell Friday afternoon.
