American politics today, 3d ed.

Bianco, William T. and David T. Canon.

This text came about originally as a result of the authors' dissatisfaction with available texts for introductory courses. They wanted to put some juice into their text and to engage students in how things work, rather than simply present the grand normative concepts. The text rests on the ideas that politics involves conflict, that the political process matters, and that politics is everywhere. This fourth edition text is clearly organized, and it is well illustrated in a manner that does not overwhelm the contents. The authors are affiliated as follows: William T. Bianco (Indiana U.) and David T. Canon (U. of Wisconsin).
