American Educational Research Association Honors Online Teacher Training for New Texas Assessment Program.

Web-Based Training Developed by the Texas Education Agency and Pearson Educational Measurement Wins First-Place Award

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Pearson Educational Measurement announced today that the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills-Alternate (TAKS-Alt) Online Training Modules, developed in collaboration with the Texas Education Agency (TEA), earned first-place honors in the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division H, School Evaluation and Program Development Publications Competition. The TAKS-Alt is not a traditional paper-and-pencil or online assessment, but rather an observation assessment used by Texas teachers to measure the progress of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities on skills aligned with academic grade-level content standards. The award, presented in April at the AERA Annual Meeting in Chicago, recognized the online training designed to help teachers implement this alternate assessment - for its design, content flow and ease of use.

The Web-based training course was developed by the TEA and Pearson Educational Measurement, in conjunction with Vangent, Inc., (formerly Pearson Performance Solutions) and Pearson creative services.

"At Pearson Educational Measurement, we are committed to collaborating with states and school districts to both develop their assessments and to ensure that they are prepared to successfully implement them," said Douglas Kubach, president and CEO. "We are proud to have our online training for the TAKS-Alt recognized by the international leader in educational research, AERA."

Pearson Educational Measurement has provided student assessment and testing services to TEA for more than 25 years. Texas offers its students one of the largest and most comprehensive state-wide testing programs in the country, and Pearson is involved in all aspects of the program, including item development, test construction review, research and psychometrics, test administration of TAKS, Spanish TAKS, Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) for English language learners, TAKS-Alt, and online testing and reporting, among other components. In addition, Pearson offers Texas school districts a series of formative assessments called PASeries([R]) (Progress Assessment Series([R])) in the Student Success Initiative grades and subjects. PASeries formative assessments provide teachers scientifically based, easy-to-use tools for measuring student growth toward performance standards.

AERA held its 88th Annual Meeting April 9-13. Approximately 15,700 education researchers from 68 countries attended this meeting, which had the theme, "The World of Educational Quality." AERA has 12 divisions.
