American Airlines announces box and bag embargo on certain flights over summer.

American Airlines (NYSE:AMR) and its regional affiliate American Eagle Airlines are putting in place a box and bag embargo on flights to selected destinations between 6 June and 25 August 2009.

Customers travelling to certain destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America will not be able to check extra bags or boxes during this period.

The embargo applies to San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa and San Salvador in Central America; Maracaibo, Cali, Medellin, La Paz, Santa Cruz and Quito in South America; Santo Domingo, Santiago, Port-au-Prince, Grenada and Kingston in the Caribbean; Nassau, George-Town, Exuma, Marsh Harbour and Freeport in the Bahamas; Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Chihuahua and Leon in Mexico; and all American Eagle flights to and from San Juan.

A year-round box embargo is in place from flights from, or passing through, New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to all Caribbean and Latin American destinations. There is also a year-round bag and box embargo in place for flights to La Paz and Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Under the embargo, oversize, overweight and excess baggage will not be accepted on flights to the above destinations. Bags that weigh between 51lbs and 70lbs are subject to a fee of USD50. One carry-on bag will be accepted with a maximum size of 45 inches and weight of 40lbs. Sports equipment will be allowed as part of the total checked baggage allowance, but additional charges may apply.
