This descriptive narrative account draws on recently recovered sources to investigate America's Black Sea fleet and its response to international humanitarian crises, revolutionary atrocities, and ethnic genocides during the era after WWI. Author Shenk (English, University of New Orleans) goes beyond naval operational accounts to trace the varied non-naval interests of the fleet's servicemen, drawing on private collections of letters, diaries, scrapbooks, and informal oral histories, along with naval academy archives. The book contains a wealth of b&w historical photos, 23 in all.
