DRCC Solution Fulfills Highest German Legal Requirements

for Minimizing Business Risk

Amdahl, the IT Infrastructure specialist, has completed a further project for Commerzbank in Frankfurt carrying out the architectural design, implementation and software development for the automation of critical business management processes for the Investment Banking section. The Business Continuity solution DRCC (Disaster Recovery Control Computer) not only ensures the fastest, most effective and risk free, emergency system restart, but also can be used as a pre-production test bed environment and also controls switching procedures in the data center.

The new Business Continuity solution meets all legal and regulatory requirements such as Basel II, the federal association for credit (BAKred) and the minimum requirements for trading systems (MAH) and continues the high investment by Commerzbank over the last few years into the quality and security of its IT infrastructure within investment banking, ensuring continued optimization of its business processes. Commerzbank plans to market the software commercially as a solution for the management of Disaster Recovery processes.

As part of this project, Amdahl developed a complete disaster recovery data center at a second site. Besides developing the architecture to protect critical business processes, Amdahl also developed the software for the automation and control of the recovery process. A key benefit of this solution was to insulate and protect the IT infrastructure from frequently changing applications, minimizing maintenance and being less inclined to faults. Amdahl also acted as the project coordinator and system integrator between manufacturers such as Sun, EMC, Brocade, StorageTek and Veritas who provided hardware and software utilized in the data center.

"Our investments in security and risk prevention have been totally worthwhile," explains Hans-Juergen Hesse, leader of C/S Services IB and responsible for the IT production in Commerzbank's investment banking sector. "Our solution for disaster recovery today is among the most modern and safest of its kind. Furthermore we have significant business and economic advantages by using it simultaneously as a pre-production test environment. With Amdahl we had an extremely experienced and competent partner, who developed a technically convincing concept and reliably managed the execution of this complex project completing each section to schedule."

Amdahl has worked for several years on projects for Commerzbank and had already implemented the complete IT infrastructure for the main data center in the investment banking area.

On the successful conclusion of this project with Commerzbank's investment banking, Detlev Prewe, vice president Strategic Accounts, Amdahl Germany commented: "In this field of Business Continuity it is about millions and billions of dollars -- the failure of one single application in the trading rooms can cause gigantic damages or failure costs per hour. Thanks to our knowledge in the area of data center management, safety and disaster recovery as well as of the processes in the financial system we have been able to design and implement the required solution."
