Ambassador to Government

Government programmes for business assistance fill volumes. Despite their abundance, however, getting the money still takes a knack. Management consultants traditionally offer to aid business relations with government. Now specialist consultants in government relations are bridging the gap between the promises of funding and the paperwork required. Part of the work is helping businessmen speak the language of the officials. Part is playing matchmaker between eager businesses that need money and bureaucrats who fear, more than anything else, that they'll make career-damaging mistakes.

Prairie Perspective Inc. is in its second year of operation as a preparer of funding proposals and project manager. Explains Eveline Holtmann, the firm's president, "We work through experience, not influence, to aim to keep clients out of trouble as much as we try to get them money."

To date, says Ms. Holtmann, she has gotten six-figure grants for an industrial firm and major funding assistance for what she calls "urban aboriginal groups," that is, city Indians. Each proposal, she explains, takes as much as three months of filling our forms, waiting for committee meetings, and explaining to officials what the client wants to do and what he needs.

The trick to getting the officials to move on proposals is persuading them that funding the clients will be good and wise for their team."
