Amazon.com to launch e-book services in Japan.

TOKYO, Oct. 20 Kyodo

U.S. Internet-based retailer Amazon.com Inc. will launch its electronic book services in Japan within this year, industry sources said Thursday.

Midsized publisher PHP Inc. will offer around 1,000 e-book titles to Amazon, which is also negotiating similar deals with other Japanese publishers, including Shogakukan Inc. and Shinchosha Publishing Co., the sources said.

The move is expected to intensify competition in Japan's e-book service market where Internet-based retailer Rakuten Inc., electronics giant Sony Corp. and other players have been active.

The Amazon.com service will allow customers to access an Amazon.com e-book website through the Internet and download e-books. The company may also consider releasing in Japan an e-book reader to be launched in the United States in November, the sources said.
