Alston hits spot after Connell's rescue job; KILMARNOCK..1 MORTON.........1 KILLIE WIN 4-3 ON PENS.

BLAIR ALSTON slipped up - but scored the sudden death penalty that landed Killie a bonus point.

Kyle Connell's late header sickened Morton after a sensational, exhausting effort on return from their Covid crisis.

Substitute Alston lost his balance stepping up to take the spot-kick but still beat Jack Hamilton.

Fellow subs Daniel Armstrong and Liam Polworth plus Fraser Murray also netted. And loan goalie Zech Hemming was a hero with two saves.

Kilmarnock now host leaders Stranraer on Saturday and Tommy Wright said: "We've a chance to go through and that's all down to the character of the players.

"A win won't guarantee it for us against Stranraer. We might need to win by a number of goals.

"I think we got what we deserved. Kyle has an eye for goal and he took it well.

"I'm really pleased how Zach came up trumps."

Morton gave notice of a full recovery from their troubles. Gus MacPherson can look to Lewis McGregor as evidence of some good news to emerge from that.

McGregor, given a debut at East Kilbride, followed that man-of-the-match display with a goal.

Excellent throughout, Gozie Ugwu's strength and hold-up play played in Kyle Jacobs who in turn found McGregor, 19, on the left.He took a touch before curling a superb first goal for the club in off the far post.

But in stoppage time, Connell glanced home from Jason Naismith's back-post header.

MacPherson said: "We have only had one group training session in 10 days."
