Alltel's Wetland Problem

We wondered why Alltel Corp. is continuing work on the construction of its new building in light of the charge by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the construction is destroying a wetland area.

Ron Helton, a Corps spokesman, says the Engineers did not issue a cease-and-desist order because the area in question is so small the Corps is confident Alltel can meet its obligations.

Alltel is putting together a proposal outlining a solution.

Joe Stanley, a project architect, says even though there is disagreement on whether the area is a wetland, the parties are working together in good faith.

Similar controversies are rearing their heads all across the country as government and businesses reckon with the stringent wetlands legislation.

One unreported option available to Alltel: It could make a cash donation equal in value to the wetland parcel to The Nature Conservancy. The value is estimated by one person close to the project at $1,000, a pittance when talking about a $7-million project.
