Allawi meets President Talabani and Barzani.

Ayad Allawi, former Iraqi Prime Minister and head of the Iraqiya bloc travelled to the Kurdistan Region on Sunday and met with the Iraqi President Talabani and the President of the Kurdistan Region Massud Barzani.

In a meeting with President Talabani held in the Kurdish city of Slemani, both sides discussed the present political situation in Iraq, and the post-election developments in the country.

"President Talabani and Mr. Allawi stressed that the nation's interest must be above all other considerations," the president's office said.

Earlier, Ayad Allawi met with Kurdish President Massud Barzani in the Salahaddin summer resort in Erbil.

The 7 March elections and the formation of the new Iraqi government were major topics of the talks.

The Kurds, who are known for their political unity, are expected to be a crucial bloc to any prospective coalition and their leaders will likely be courted extensively by all sides.
